The Ring of Truth

The Metro's cover today features an enormous blow-up of the note with which Condolezza Rice told the President that Iraq had been officially granted independance.

In a corner, the leader of the free world has scrawled--apparently in Sharpie--"Let freedom reign!"

Um, excuse me? Isn't that an egregious misquotation? This handwritten memo was presumably released to the press to be used for just such purposes. Did the image consultant team decide we hadn't gotten our Bushonics dose for the week or something? That the American people might start suspecting him of being articulate, and therefore a pointy-headed elitist, unless we received a reminder?

On the other hand, it is kind of apt, considering how anxious this administration is to rein in our freedoms.

Bushonics would be "let freedom rain". This counts as a clever allusion.

Allusion to WHAT?

Allusion to "let freedom ring." It's hard to know whether it was a deliberate allusion or an inadvertant misquotation, but while I'd hate to give him the benefit of the doubt, I also dislike assuming someone's wrong based only on past behavior combined with ambiguous evidence. He might be smarter than we all think he is, and therefore also more evil. ~Steph

There is a linguistics term that I can't remember for when a phrase with a straighforward meaning changes in popular parlance to one that sounds alike, but retains its original, now nonliteral, meaning. This doesn't quite qualify (Freedom could, after all, reign) but it's pretty close. No question in my mind that he meant "Let freedom ring", but his version may become the standard one.

I haven't been up to anything , not that it matters. Basically nothing seems important, but I guess it doesn't bother me. Not much on my mind to speak of. Today was a loss, but maybe tomorrow.

My life's been pretty unremarkable lately, but pfft. Oh well. My mind is like a void. I haven't gotten much done.
