Spike converted me to Maker's Mark manhattans long ago. I already knew I liked bourbon, but her enthusiasm has been very infectious.
My first e-mail to Erika proposed a date at the CBC since "I've never met a geologist who didn't like beer." Well, it turns out that I had, but over the next few months she went from hesitantly sipping at some of my pints, to developing personal favorites, to having become a true beer enthusiast by the time we broke up early this month.
Now Spike has led me to my new booze passion-- eight-year-old Barbancourt rum(warning: severely flashulent site), a lovely Hatian rum made with sugar cane juice instead of molassass. It's light in color, and deliciously sweet and buttery. I usually drink it over lots of ice, sometimes with a couple drops of lime juice. It's also scandalously cheap as sippin' booze goes, going for a little more than $20/bottle at most liquor stores.

If you like Barbancourt rum, you may enjoy my liquor obsession of the moment: cachaça (if the special character doesn't come through -- I don't know how to do 8-bit characters in Markdown -- it's a cedilla, as in 'façade'). Wonderful stuff with a bit of lime and good sugar....

Mmm, beer.
The Fruitbat and I had a conversation in which we realized that one day, across the ages, we would still be a part of the "Sebbo taught me about Beer" web. That's kinda cool.

(I got to just cut 'n' paste--lucky me)
That's that white Brazilian stuff, yeah? I tried a mojito-type beverage that featured it about a decade ago, and thought it was raw and naaaaasty (and not in a good way). I'm due to try it again though. My tastes have evolved a lot since then.

You probably had a caipirinha.... There are reasons that cachaca is usually tempered with lime juice and sugar.
